Get started

Your first OKR in five minutes.

Free and open source. Runs on your machine. Your account lives in your own install.

  1. Check Node.js

    You need Node.js 22.13 or newer.

    $ node --version
    # v22.13.0 or higher

    Don’t have it? Get it from nodejs.org or run nvm install 22.

  2. Install OKR.ai

    $ npx okr-ai@latest

    It starts on localhost:3000.

  3. Set a secret key

    Optional on a laptop, required in production. Add it to a .env file:

    OKRAI_SECRET_KEY="paste the output of: openssl rand -base64 32"
    # Optional: one AI key for everyone. Or paste a key later in the AI model panel.
    OKRAI_AI_PROVIDER="anthropic" # or openai, deepseek, openrouter
    OKRAI_AI_KEY=""

    No AI key yet? Set OKRAI_MOCK_LLM=1 to try every flow.

  4. Create your account

    Open localhost:3000, enter your work email and type the code. No mail server yet? The code shows on screen.

    The first person in becomes the workspace admin. SSO can come later.

  5. Add your team

    Use the + under your node to add reports, or upload a whole org from Team import.

  6. Draft your first OKR

    Click your node → My OKRs → Add OKR. Write the objective and AI drafts the key results.

    Done. Everything lives in ./data/okrai.db on your machine.
